St. John's Three-Year-Old Program offers a curriculum that is theme-based and allows each child to explore, question, and learn at their own pace. Children are given the opportunity to learn in a developmentally-appropriate environment. On a daily basis children are exposed to a variety of hands-on experiences that assist in exploring the areas of Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Music, and Art.
Letter, sound, and number recognition are a part of our daily curriculum along with many other skills that foster independence and create life-long learners. Socialization is also encouraged throughout the daily activities as an integral part of the preschool experience. Learning centers are introduced during exploration time daily so children can move through these areas as they discover and expand their interests. Examples of some of the learning centers are dramatic play, building/construction, reading/listening, block center, art center, and a reading readiness center. These learning areas are filled with fun and age-appropriate puzzles, manipulatives, games, and toys.
We use The Story curriculum as part of our devotional lessons as we go to Chapel once a month to reinforce Christian values that we are learning in the classroom. The children also have the opportunity to go to our school's library and check out books. Outdoor play/indoor movement is a part of our daily routine since it enhances physical development and gross motor skill development.
New last year is the optional enrichment day on Mondays for students enrolled in the Tuesday/Thursday or Wednesday/Friday two-day class. This will be a blended class of students from both two-day classes. The maximum class size is 16. This extra day will offer an extension of learning activities and will follow the same daily schedule and format used during class on Tuesday/Thursday and Wednesday/Friday. It will not be offered on an "as-needed" basis. Parents who choose not to register now for the Monday class will have the option of doing so later in the school year based on available space.
